Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

This management lesson conveys the idea that using deceit, manipulation, or insincere tactics may help a person achieve a position of power, influence, or success initially, but such behavior is unlikely to sustain their success in the long run. Here’s a short story which highlights that bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there. The story is followed by our perspective on the situation.

A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighed the turkey, “but I haven’t got the energy.”

“Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?”replied the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.”

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally, after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree.

Soon, though, the turkey was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Moral Of The Story: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

Our management lessons highlight different perspectives on workplace dynamics. While deceitful or insincere behavior may provide short-term advantages in climbing the ladder of success or achieving certain goals, it is unlikely to lead to sustained success or effective leadership. Long-term success is often built on a foundation of trust, authenticity, and ethical conduct. People who use “bullshit” to advance may find that their tactics ultimately undermine their ability to maintain their position and reputation in the long run.
